Winchester College is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of our pupils, regardless of age, ability, race, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation or class.
We are committed to providing a caring environment, instilled through a culture of openness and collective responsibility.
The College will take all allegations of safeguarding and bullying seriously.
Safeguarding is at the heart of pastoral care at Winchester College. It is in all that we do for the best interests of our pupils, enabling them to achieve their potential. All staff have a role to play in safeguarding by ensuring a safe environment in which children can learn. Staff are there to listen to any concerns a pupil may have, and will take prompt action to ensure the matter is addressed.
In addition to the wide pastoral care provision for each individual pupil, they also have access to two Independent Listeners and the School Counselling Service. Safeguarding and pastoral matters are reviewed on a continual basis to reflect the ever-changing developments needed for effective safeguarding. We encourage all members of our community, past and present, to raise their concerns no matter how trivial they may perceive it to be.
The School follows the locally-agreed inter-agency procedures of Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership. Our policy is intended to clarify how those standards are met by the School. The policy is reviewed annually to ensure that it complies with current legislation, which includes an update and review of the effectiveness of safeguarding procedures and their implementation at the College. The Policy is approved by the Warden and Fellows. The College contributes to an annual schools’ safeguarding audit carried out by Hampshire County Council.
The Safeguarding Team is led by our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Ali Harber (Deputy Head Pastoral).
Mr Iain Smith (Second Master), Mr Simon Mildinhall (Surmaster Pastoral), Mr Callum Barnes, and Mrs Belen Lopez act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.
Mrs Alison Mayne is the Governing Body's Safeguarding Lead.
